StarOffice was
originally published by a company called Star Division in Germany, but it was
recently bought (the company) by Sun Microsystems.
It is freely available for download, but is not open
source software, in the sense of Gnu. The
idea is that individuals will like using it, will appreciate the fact that it
isn't published by the Microsoft empire,
and will ask for it to be available for use at their places of employment. (Sun
hates Microsoft.)
