Office Suites and Components

An office suite isn't really technical computing software, but nearly everyone uses them, even scientists and engineers. It is also true that many computers come with both Windows and some kind of office suite. When I bought my Dell desktop computer in 1995, for example, Microsoft Office Pro was included. Times have changed, lawsuits have been filed by the federal government and competitors of Microsoft and, lo!, you now have to pay extra for what I and many others got for free a few years ago. It is much more typical now that the computer includes Microsoft Works, a smaller and less capable suite.

Actually, most people will find that MS Works takes care of all their needs. It's great for writing letters and keeping simple spreadsheets. If you need more, try Star Office, which is a free download for personal use, especially for students.
